The September global AI subscription revenue ranking is out: the Top 100 pulled in an estimated $6.1 billion in a single month. And that money is basically split between two companies and a crowd of programmers.
Claude ranks first with $3.05 billion; ChatGPT is second with $2.08 billion. Together the two take 84%. The interesting wrinkle: ChatGPT has three times as many paying users as Claude. Claude overtakes it on price — 7.3% of its users subscribe to plans starting at $100 a month.
Strip those two out, and of the remaining $900 million-plus, coding tools alone eat nearly half. Cursor pulls $334 million in a single month, third on the overall list; Devin is fifth. They can charge $1,000–2,000 a month because they replace engineers who cost $10,000+ a month in salary.
Then look at conversion: tools that get work done are worth far more than chat tools. Grok has 200 million monthly actives, yet each visit converts to just $0.20 of revenue. Cursor, with one-tenth of the traffic, generates 40 times the revenue. The median price across the whole ranking is $20 a month, but that cohort contributes only 4.8% of revenue. The people actually paying big money are still the professional users willing to pay for productivity.
