# Recap | Unique Research × Microsoft Accelerator Open Day — Go-Global AI Founders, 0→1 Product

_Unique Research · Recap · May 7, 2024_

On **April 25**, Unique Research and Microsoft Accelerator co-hosted _Practice & Experience Sharing in AI Independent Development_ in Shanghai. Speakers covered product, growth, and legal risk for AI apps from 0→1: **Li Ziran**, CEO of Bootloader; **Luan Xiaorui**, CEO of NewOaks AI; **Wei Yipei**, AFFiNE cofounder & former head of operations; and **Cai Yeting**, partner at Shanghai Haoxin Law Firm.

## Opening — Microsoft Accelerator

**Zhou Jian**, GM of Microsoft Accelerator North Asia, welcomed attendees. Microsoft positions itself as a generative-AI leader and uses Open Day–style sessions to connect upstream and downstream ecosystem partners and accelerate Chinese AI startups. Going forward, beyond its historical B2B focus, the accelerator is opening go-global tracks to gaming, e-commerce, entertainment, education, Web3, and AI-powered tools.

## Data snapshot — Unique Capital

Unique Capital partner **Wu Wei (Delta)** framed the global GenAI landscape: AI is becoming a daily necessity for individuals and enterprises. ChatGPT alone has nearly **300M** monthly active users, though retention and frequency still have room to grow. Globally there are **7,000+** AI apps; **1,833** have monthly visits above 10,000; combined visits reach **7.7B** with **950M** hours of usage. Domestic apps such as Ernie Bot (文心一言) and Kimi.AI also stand out. ByteDance, Baidu, and peers are shipping across multiple products; despite a tougher VC climate, AI investment remains hot. Lower creative cost, new interaction paradigms, and productivity gains point to lasting impact on work and life.

## Bootloader — Li Ziran on building AI apps

Li argued AI is progressing toward AGI, with applications over the next **5–10 years** unlocking capabilities hard to imagine today. Progress is stepwise; founders must keep shipping. Today’s field is still a competition of **small products** — iterate hard, raise the bar, and treat shipping as training. Complement gaps through partnership or services and aim to become a well-rounded “pentagon warrior.”

## NewOaks AI — Luan Xiaorui on go-global growth

Luan’s go-global playbook starts from the customer: focus on overseas markets, solve a concrete problem, and weigh AI efficiency against willingness to pay. Retention is still low and often curiosity-driven; the path forward is delivering real B2B value. His caution list: avoid moonshot disruption; compete in red oceans; don’t chase scale-for-scale’s sake or free forever; be careful with VC. Sequence marketing before product; practice **Build in Public**; use SEO and personal brand to find seed users; quantify PMF. Growth modes include FLG, PLG, and SLG — founders should own early sales and support, then lean on product and sales. Winning AI go-global products help SMEs get more efficient and expand into a product matrix.

## AFFiNE — Wei Yipei on open-source growth

Wei shared a zero-paid-marketing case: open-source ops that earned **6,000 GitHub stars in one week**. First lock the business model before open-sourcing, so the traffic spike can convert. Pre-ship a solid GitHub README, PR pieces, developer docs, and SNS/community plans. After launch, stay close to the user community, book 1:1s with high-value users, and post wherever competitors announce news. Balance refactoring against UX gaps.

## Legal — Cai Yeting on overseas compliance

Cai covered foreign-investment access and local policy limits; whether to set up a local entity (tax and liability trade-offs); IP protection and data privacy/security; hiring locals under labor and tax rules with valid contracts; and ongoing compliance monitoring — local commercial law, internal controls, and regular audits plus regulator dialogue.

## Closing & Microsoft Accelerator recruiting

Attendees rated the session highly. Microsoft Accelerator and Unique Capital said they will keep supporting Chinese AI founders. The accelerator continues to recruit go-global AI startups — preferably with prior financing — in gaming, e-commerce, entertainment, education, Web3, or AI tool products. Offerings include a Microsoft cloud package (Azure OpenAI, GPU fast track, Office / Dynamics / GitHub / LinkedIn quotas), 1:1 technical advisors, and custom support to reach Microsoft’s global innovation ecosystem.
